Now that's very interesting...

The Dashboard is connected to the Dock. Kill the dock, and the dashboard widgets go as well....

'cause Disk Utility was being stupid and not force quitting, and it wasn't showing up in the list of processes... so I thought it might have been the Dock that wasn't updating itself (and realizing that Disk Utility was dead). So I killed the Dock to get it to restart. Kinda.
