Hmmm. Updating a Google cache...?
Some time ago, I came across a hotel chain whose wireless required passwords and such, but I discovered directory listings was enabled. Having wandered around a bit, I posted all of the information I found while wandering, and left the post open to the public. :) And today, one of the maintainers of the code came across it via google (or something like that), and said hi to me over AIM. We talked for a bit - I located the hotel (or at least the one I think it was) and gave that to him. Post has been friend-locked, so the code's no longer globally available. Link to the entry is here:

(With hopes that google will access it, and update their cache. It doesn't exist on archive.org, so that's not an issue - just getting the information "offline", since the issue's been taken care of. Hopefully.)

(For my own record, that was StayOnline. And he.. might-have-kinda-offered to "comp" it for me. :D Although it didn't work out in the end... since he probably didn't want to give me his contact info. And I honestly probably wouldn't have used it for some time, anyways... nice of him to offer though. "comp" => complimentary, or compensate. Probably the former, as defined in the second definition on urbandictionary.com.)

12:20:19 PM Ben: and it was nice meeting you too. :) I must say it's nice to know posting that stuff actually helped someone..
12:20:22 PM ST: Let me know if you're ever in one of the hotels we service, and they charge for wireless. I'll see what I can do about comping it for you.
12:20:47 PM Ben: Oooh, ok.
12:20:55 PM Ben: uh, which hotels do you service?
12:21:10 PM ST: Usually only the expensive business hotels charge, but there are some others that do too.
12:21:30 PM ST: Various Marriotts, Hyatts, Hiltons, Omnis, and some other smaller chains.
12:21:59 PM ST: Usually you'll see something about access being provided by StayOnline.
12:22:25 PM ST: If not on the front page, in the clickthrough T&A
12:23:20 PM Ben: StayOnline, huh.. ok.. cool. Um, how will I be able to reach you? Just pay and get online, then over AIM?
12:23:37 PM ST: ...
12:23:43 PM ST: Alright, I feel like a retard now :)
12:23:58 PM ST: No, if you've already paid there's not much I can do about it, haha.

People who work with expensive hotels throw around the word "comp" (as in complementary) all the time. My mom's a meeting planner and tells people that she can get this and that comped for them.

Ah, ok.

Although, that said, I don't know how someone can actually give you free access. I've never seen a StayOnline page. It's usually people with some level of influence that offer people things, isn't it?

Well, I got the impression that he was a coder - he found his way to the page through his username. So he has some measure of power, at least in code. And slipping a loophole, or opening a test account wouldn't be impossible to do.

Hahah I remember that post... I wonder if the whole system was setup by them or just the app... as in... did he, as a coder really have access to disabling directory listings?

I would hazard the entire system was set up by them. Although I doubt he had access to disabling directory listings, but I'm sure, at the very least, he'd know who to contact.
